Master of suspense, James Patterson, takes us into a terrifying underworld with this second thriller in his dazzling Women's Murder Club series.
When a little girl is shot on the steps of a San Francisco church, Detective Lindsay Boxer knows it's time to reconvene the Women's Murder Club. Working with reporter Cindy Thomas, assistant DA Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, Lindsay tracks a mystifying killer who soon turns his pursuers into his victims.
The unorthodox allegiances of the Women's Murder Club leads them to suspect the unexpected - the killer may be an ex-cop. But nothing could prepare them for the demented logic behind his choice of victims.

2nd Chance is an exciting read. Any one who is familiar with the San Francisco/Oakland bay area will see the places in 2nd Chance. The reader may have some idea as to who the killer is and maybe not. I know I had a couple of characters in mind and I was wrong. That is good writing. After the death of Lindsay Boxer's boy friend and lover in 1st to Die, Lindsay has gone over and beyond in her desire to solve any homicide that is committed in San Francisco. In 2nd Chance, Lindsay travels to Napa wine country and then on to Cleveland, Ohio where similar murders have been committed. Lindsay believes these are the same killer. She gets together with her friends, Jill, the deputy DA of San Francisco County, Claire, San Francisco ME, and her good friend from the San Francisco Chronicle, Cindy. Cindy does some research in the Chronicle's files to find some clues as to whom maybe the "Chimera." Lindsay father left when Lindsay was very young and he too was a SFPD officer, when he suddenly reappears into her life. But why now? Why would her father show up now? Does he have some connection with the killer? Why was a child murdered leaving church choir practice? There are many questions to be answered. You can find the answers byreading this fine novel. Recommended for the mature reader. Language and sexual content. DP, Castro Valley, CAProduct details

2nd Chance (Audible Audio Edition) James Patterson Andrew Gross Melissa Leo Jeremy Piven Hachette Audio UK Books Reviews
A police officer that was convicted of killing a child goes on a shooting spree, killing 8 people with excellent shooting skills. Well woven suspense as the heroine follows the trail of the suspect. A twist at the end of the book as the original suspect is dead and the real suspect, when about to be captured decides to become a sniper at a college.Excellent reading.
Someone is targeting blacks and cops. This person has a tattoo with a goat and lion head with a serpents tail. It is called a Chimera. Lt. Lindsay Boxer along with her friends finally discover who the killer is.
Another great book by James Patterson.
I enjoy reading James Patterson, so I'm not inclined to pan his work. 2nd Chance is a fast read. It's light. It doesn't require the reader to do much thinking. The only disappointment I had was that Lindsay Boxer, for just one brief but fairly important moment, appears to go brain dead - which is the exact opposite of what you would expect from this character. But this "brain dead" moment sets the stage for a good portion of the book. This "moment" happens about 70% through the story. The killer has been identified and located but there is not enough tangible evidence to arrest him. Rather than establish 24/7 surveillance of the suspect (which would dramatically increase the odds of catching the bad guy in the act and thus produce evidence), Lindsay decides to "rattle the guy" and "turn his life upside down." She thus confronts the killer and in essence notifies him that they are on to him. This is not what a super-smart, going to show up all the men in the world, highly decorated, recently promoted, female detective would do. It's something Jacobi (her ex-partner) would do, but not Lindsay. This brain dead moment tended to spoil the rest of the story for me. You would think that Patterson, after so many years of writing these kind of stories, would not let such an odd, illogical twist occur within his main character.
This second book in the Women's Murder Club series was okay -- entertaining enough and a quick read -- but I had really enjoyed the first in the series, 1st to Die, and was looking forward to this sequel. I was disappointed, though, finding this installment less thrilling and less engaging. The murders and solution were less interesting; whereas 1st to Die had lots of twists and revelations, this has one twist that's not really very surprising, and there is no mystery to speak of -- a straightforward motive that precludes any tension building as the case proceeds. Also, perhaps because the author assumes you've read the first book, he doesn't bother to devote much space to character development, which is unfortunate since it is the friendship and abilities of detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends, the D.A., the reporter and the coroner, that make the series interesting. The appearance of Lindsay's absentee father is a nice touch, though, and adds to our understanding of her character.
Less forgivable is that characters make silly mistakes. For example, Lindsay decides to follow a dangerous suspect into an unknown, dark location knowing that her cell phone battery is dead and that no one knows where she is. Ouch. How is that consistent with the main character being intelligent? Another, less critical but still annoying, mistake -- characters refer to "Zena the Warrior Woman". Do they mean "Xena, Warrior Princess" perhaps? Did anybody proof this? Print is large, chapters are short, and there's lots of white space -- it's nominally 400 pages, but is probably only about 250. All-in-all, this is a moderately enjoyable pseudo-thriller that may leave you feeling a bit short-changed. Just my opinion, but I recommend buying it used or checking it out from the library.
This was a very entertaining story, with excitement, mystery, and out of the box thinking. The people in the story are above normal in taking a situation and breaking it down into usable parts. The Lt and Homeland assistant director do a lot of digging into old cases to find the person that they are looking for. They find the criminal and prevent a large disaster from taking place.
Once again James Patterson & Andrew Gross combine to engage the reader with another page turning thriller. Lt. Lindsey Boxer and her Women's Murder Club cohorts, Clare, Cindy and Jill are drawn together to solve a case involving a sharp shooter who's terrorizing the city. The twists & complications in this case are typical Patterson intrigue but with a fascinatingly surprise conclusion. Anyone who has enjoyed this series will find this as worthy as the previous installments.
